From Main Frame to Tablet PC

The personal computing established its regime in the decade of 1990. In this decade the purchase of computers were on the higher side among all the electronic products. Although the computing had begun at the time of 2nd world war, however for the long time its usage was very rare. In 1980, with the use of Motorolla 8086 processor, its size and cost started reducing and by 1990 it had been changed altogether. It would not be wrong if it is said that the honor of introducing personal computers or P.C. goes to IBM, that amazed the world after introducing first complete desktop computer unit. Before this introduction, there was no machine that could be called business machine. Computer usage was only limited to research or collecting scientific statistics.

In 1981, personal computer was introduced officially with Microsoft Disk Operating System. On the other hand many companies introduced Micro Computers could be connected with a common T.V. They received rather much popularity than IBM Personal Computer. The big reason for their popularity was their low cost and the facility of computer games. That’s why they were much popular among children particularly. Commodore and ZX Spectrum are more worth mentioning among them, which required no prior operating system knowledge. We cannot say these computers completely as personal rather they were useful for basic use and gaming. During the same time Apple Company introduced its MACINTOSH computer commercially. It received great popularity especially in the field of publication and animation.

In the beginning, knowing of operating system was must for using Personal Computes but the Apple Macintosh provided new facility by introducing Graphic User Interface (GUI), whereas there was no facility of Graphic User Interface in Personal Computes and they could not be used without disk operating system. Even then Personal Computes were more popular than MACINTOSH because of their constantly reducing cost. In 1985 IBM used third Party peripherals in their systems that reduced its cost even more.

Microsoft played an important role in the popularity of Personal Computers. After understanding DOS the usage of Personal Computers was easier, but in order to gain full command, knowing of computer languages was also the must requirement, therefore, the use of Personal Computers remained limited in that era and new IBM systems like System 32 and System 36 were introduced, which had been used as a Main Frame. They were of grand size and their electricity and space consumption was also higher. Seeing the changing trend of technology, many other companies decided to step in the field of computer manufacturing. This brought revolution in the computer world and new term i.e. IBM compatible came forward. PC-XT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium I, II, III and IV provided great facilities in the computer field. At the same time Multimedia Technology in Personal Computers also flourished.

On the other hand Microsoft gave its operating system a new shape, which was given the name of “Windows”, which was totally GUI based. The first version of “Windows” was 3.0, which was liked much. Seeing its popularity, new “Windows” version 3.1 came in the market. However, installation of DOS was still necessary for its usage. Windows 95 was the first complete GUI operating system. Afterwards many Windows Version were introduced some of which are Windows 97, 98, NT2000 & XP. Windows XP was the first Dual operating system introduced on 21 Aug, 2001, which received great popularity. After that for the long time Microsoft didn’t introduce any new operating system. However, Widows Service Pack and Servers addition continue to come in the market. During this period, approximately five years Microsoft paid more attention on “Applications” but still managed working on operating system as well. On 22nd July 2005 a new version with the name Windows Vista came in the Market.

It would be pertinent mentioning here that till then personal computing was being done on 34 bit processor. Vista was the first of its kind operating system that totally supported 64 bit computing. Obviously for its running 64 bit compatible hardware was also required. Therefore, some 64 bit processors were introduced. Intel, Athlon, Drone and Sempron of AMD are worth mentioning 64 bit processors. These processors use 64 Nanometer technologies. On 22nd October 2009, Microsoft introduced complete 64 bit operating system with the name Windows 7. Although new operating system could be run on any standard system, but in order to achieve its full advantages, new Architecture was needed. Keeping this thing in consideration Core I series processors are introduced, which works under 32 Nanometer technologies, therefore, they are many times faster than the previous processors. They would also save energy. New mother boards, Memory Module, Graphic Processor etc. based on new Architecture has also been introduced. It is worth mentioning here that in the past computers were used only for calculations but now they are being used for the complete Multi Media Applications. Traditional CRT has been replaced by LCD Screen for display.

The journey of innovation of Computers continued fast but still the replacement of all the computer’s parts required much care and keeping in view the problems of business community such as their need of computers during traveling, the concept of Mobil computing was presented and thus laptops were introduced. Laptops are like some big book having all the peripherals built-in including screen. They are also called notebooks. Afterwards Palm Top computers were introduced which were even shorter than Laptops and notebooks. Likewise Mobile computing got popularity very soon and new era was started with the introduction of wireless computing. The use of wireless broadband was started that used Blue Tooth, Yi Fi and Y-Max technologies for connectivity. Due to these technologies computing is now possible via Mobiles also. It’s not all over, but now mobile phones have also taken the shape of complete Multimedia Applications. On the other hand the most modern form of computers is now becoming common with the name of Tablet PC. There is no keyboard in Tablet PC rather all the work is done by touch screen system. Additionally E-book readers are also getting popular rapidly in the market.

Personal computers remained suspended for some while after their advent, the reason for it was the lack of expertise in computer languages, whereas it has been cleared now that making of own package with the help of language is much more important than a ready made program. In the computer world the importance of software is same as that of Hardware. In the software world the Microsoft Company stepped in by means of operating system M.S. DOS. Many versions of DOS were introduced. But in 1991, the Software Development Company introduced GUI operating system with the name of Windows along with MS. DOS 6.0. With the advent of Windows in the computer world the history of Computing changed altogether, since in the DOS environment you could only see the text spreading on the screen. The white words on the black computer screen looked nice but without pictures they were not sufficient. GUI operating system was the first of its kind graphical system. This graphical system made it possible that we can see beautiful pictures and programs on the screen easily and can also play every kind of computer games. Windows 7 is the most modern operating system till now.
The revolutionary progress in the computer world took place when new, unique and useful computer software packages were introduced in the market and their importance was felt in the official and business sector. Among all these advancements, Computers also played vital role in bringing the world closer and strengthening world’s economy by means of internet. Not only distances reduced but also the business dealings started in the new way and new business markets came into existence. Mobile banking, Internet Banking and other business dealing are being carried out online. Any House or office in the world looks incomplete without computers nowadays. However with the advancement of technology the demand of the computers is also changing rapidly. Around the globe the leaning of people from Personal computers to Laptop is now diverting towards Tablet computer.
According to the statistics of international data corporation this is the first time in any year that more than 3% of Personal computers’ export has been decreased internationally. In the first three months of this year totally 84.3 million computers were exported. In spite of clear reduction in the cost, people are not ready to buy them. But they are now taking more interest in Multi Media Tablets and IPads because these things can be kept like a notebook or diary.
